Recently I was asked to compose and read a poem for our church ladies function. The Seasons is that poem. I've also published two others of mine. I hope you enjoy them.
We mark the passing of the year by four
Winter, Summer, Spring and Fall
Each has something we adore,
Each has something we abhor
In the winter we love the snow
And the fireside’s cheery glow
Time for yuletide and the joys it brings
The birth of our Savior and our King
But in the winter is the bitter cold,
It chills the bones and fractures the soul
In the summertime the woods are green
There’s fishing, swimming and the open screen
Picnics on the fourth of July
Time for watermelon and cherry pie
But in the summer comes the scorching heat
Not even the dark gives us relief
In the spring our joy we bring
To the Risen Savior praises sing
Lilacs sweet aroma fills the evening air
It seems a time to lose our cares.
But spring times brings the torrential rains
Terrifying winds, building bane
Fall colors and frosty nights
Bring the ending of the summer blight
Pumpkin pie and days of thanks
Trick or treat and childhood pranks
A curse upon the eyes and nose
Ragweed blooms and sneezes blow
These years of seasons that fly away
Drawing us closer to the grave
Can be pointless unless we know
The One to whom every season we can go
He calls to us with loving arms
“Leave behind the earthly charms
Come to me all ye who labor
I Am the Christ, the risen Savior”
My heart is troubled
And I am afraid
Afraid of the judgment to come
Afraid of the race never won,
Those we thought faithful
Are those who betrayed.
A shepherd
A brother
A sister
A wife
Where is the victory?
Where is the life?
And would I tell the dark places in my own soul?
Would you hear the thoughts
I don’t always control?
I can hear
The countless voices
Of the martyrs crying,
“Is this what we’ve come to?
Is this why we’re dying?”
But then the morning dawns bright
The birds are singing in the new light.
The flowers, the breeze
the leaves in the trees
Remind me that His love
Transcends everything.
Each one must stand strong,
In the light of his word
And the path will be lit
By the love of our God
We must not give him our most
But give him our all
When we hear his voice
And answer his call
And though we stumble
We will not fall,
For we hold the hand
Of Lord Jesus,
The Great King of All.
For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” Psalms 30:5
Drops of crystal pain
Slip from my eyes;
Like tiny droplets of rain
From the blackened sky.
Heartache rends my soul
as I grieve to say goodbye
His unseen arms enfold,
Jesus gently lets me cry.
My soul cries out to Him
His mercies comfort me
I know he'll bring great good
But it’s good I cannot see.
Through this life of mine
I have seen much joy and pain
None go unscathed
There's always days of rain.
In these days of darkness
God gives me love and care
A kind word
A hug
And a promise of a prayer.
He promises never to leave
In the glad days and the grim
My soul will always find new strength
I know that comes from Him.
