I have many great examples of God speaking to me through this medium of communication. One such situation happened just the other day. I was working on a story that I will be posting soon. I was having some real struggles with what I wanted to write, because I was afraid it was going to sound goofy, or worse, turn people off. My brain was tired of trying to figure it out, so I decided to go on a mindless scroll on Face Book. I believe I posted a status on this.
In any case, I scrolled down and suddenly came across a shared post from the page, Authors Publish, and I knew it was the Lord. “'Don't try to figure out what other people want to hear from you, figure out what you have to say. It's the one and only thing you have to offer.'~ Barbara Kingsolver” Even the name of the person who originally said it pointed to the Lord!
Today was another example of the Lord speaking to me through Face Book. For the last couple of days I have made allusions to some difficulty that has been in our lives, concerns for a friend. It's been heart breaking and to be honest, after yesterday and this morning I felt like I was ready to be done with it all. God is good. In my routine, after my time with the Lord and praying for our friend, I was scrolling down Face Book. Almost the first thing I saw on my Face Book page was “Never give up on anybody. Miracles happen every day.”
Now, I realize some people might laugh at the idea that the Lord speaks through Face Book, but it makes perfect sense to me. God communicates to us in all sorts of ways. In the Bible he spoke in many different ways including through a donkey, a whisper, and through writing on a wall. Hearing the voice of the Lord is nothing to laugh about derisively. There were some in the Bible who didn't take the Lord as seriously as they ought with dire consequences. One person was killed by a lion, but the lion left the donkey alone and another was killed because worms ate him. Truly the writer of Hebrews was correct in saying, “It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).
Some might ask how I know it is the Lord speaking. He has spoken to me on several occasions and on each of these occasions there has been a sense of what I was hearing was definitely from the Lord. The Bible knows me inside and out, and it is indeed alive and active, sharper than a double edged sword even though I don't know how sharp a double edged sword is or supposed to be. He speaks to me with discipline and with gentleness and always I know how much he loves me. I've heard the voice of the Lord through bumper stickers, through the wind in the leaves, through a still small voice and very often through his word, whether spoken or through the reading of it.
God wants to speak to all of us and use all of us for the betterment of ourselves and of those around us. He's all around us speaking, and we can hear him if we take the time to listen. If the Lord wrote on the king's wall while they were partying, surely he will write on our Face Book Wall!
